Swishing oil around in your mouth seems like an outrageous detoxification method, but what if I told you that this simple task has numerous health benefits? Who has ever heard of Oil Pulling? Did it seem too good to be true when you read the reviews? Were you suspicious of claims that swishing oil could have any benefits for the body? Maybe you thought it was another health trend that gained popularity. To be honest, that is exactly how I felt initially when I heard about Oil Pulling. I had some serious doubts about the benefits of swishing oil and what it could potentially do for my body and health, but I thought it would be worth a shot to try it. And boy, am I glad I tried it!
I began using the method of oil pulling a few years ago when I heard about the positive benefits of clearing up acne. In my mid-20’s, I had more acne than I did in my high school years (not something any 20-something girl wants to be dealing with, let's be honest ladies). At first I doubted that such a simple thing as swishing coconut oil for 20 minutes could combat my breakouts, but I was desperate enough to try. And you know what, it worked! After consistently oil pulling for two weeks, I noticed that my blemishes not only diminished, but cleared up entirely! My skin also took on a beautiful luster and glow that I had never seen before! I was hooked!
So what is Oil Pulling, you may be asking...
Oil Pulling is the act of swishing oil in the mouth for up to 20 minutes, followed by spitting and rinsing. Oil Pulling is referred to as 'gandusha,' and is rooted in Ayurvedic Medicine (this means that it has been around a lot longer than your name-brand tooth paste has). It can be used to clean and detoxify teeth and gums, aiding in the whitening of teeth and the minimization of sensitivity and plaque. Oil Pulling is not meant to replace brushing, but rather assist with improving dental health. Oil Pulling is also reported to help with skin conditions, arthritis, asthma, headaches, hormone imbalances, infections and liver problems. Puneet Nanda, the creator of GuruNanda Pulling Oil, states that, “the whole purpose of oil pulling is to get rid of the oil-soluble toxins in the body.”
So how does Oil Pulling work...
Essentially, you take about a teaspoon of a vegetable based oil and swish it like it was mouth wash for 20 minutes. I personally prefer to use Coconut oil, but you can use Olive, Avocado, or Almond oil. If you are going to use coconut oil (or any oil for that matter), make sure it is unrefined coconut oil, as the heating process in refining oils usually diminishes its nutritional and restorative values. Now when I say timing is everything with Oil Pulling, I mean timing is EVERYTHING!!! Twenty minutes is the magic number, as it is long enough to break through plaque and bacteria in the mouth, but not long enough for the body to reabsorb toxins and bacteria that are now in the oil. Start with 5 minutes and progress your way to 20 minutes. Whatever you do, do NOT swallow any of the oil! Swishing the oil in your mouth collects bacteria built up in-between your teeth, gums and on your tongue, as well as pulls bacteria from your saliva glands. What started out as simple oil has turned into a liquid collection of bacteria, toxins and puss (gross, I know). Once you have swished away for 20 minutes, spit the oil out (always in the trash too! Oil can clog pipes, so you never want to spit it down the drain or in the toilet). Rinse well with warm water to get rid of any remaining oil, and then follow with brushing your teeth. Your breath should be sweet and fresh once you are done!
Besides clearing up skin blemishes, Oil Pulling is also beneficial to your teeth & gums. You’ll notice how fresh and sweet your breath is afterwards. It can help with tartar control, and cleans up gunk stuck between your gums. Oil Pulling is also a great method to use for preventative care for your body. By making oil pulling part of your daily routine, you cleanse your body of built up bacteria that can easily turn into a cold or some other sickness. You will also notice that you’ll have a lot more energy by consistently oil pulling. Depleting your bodies stores of bacteria allows for your body to use it’s energy properly and focus on improving yourself rather than protecting yourself and using all the energy to fight off a sickness.
I’m a believer in oil pulling, it has been a life changer for me, and I will continue to share my story of success with others. Please consider oil pulling and give it a try! I would love to hear your feedback and what benefits you experienced!
